Kelly's Directory 1930 reads :-

"The church of St. Nicholas is an edifice of stone in the 12th century Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and embattled western tower, with pinnacles and graceful crocketed spire, containing a clock and 6 bells, three being rehung and three new bells added in 1892:

the south aisle is separated from the nave by an arcade of three arches: the 15th century chapel retains a piscine and has a richly-worked parapet with pinnacles: the aisle was rebuilt in the 14th century:

the south porch is Perpendicular, and above the arch is a rude invocatory inscription in Latin, on behalf of Thomas Pacy, a member of a family by whom the manor was held, temp. Henry VI.;

built in the north doorway, now closed, are two sepulchral slabs of a priest and a civilian, with figures of censing angels on each side of the latter:

the stained east window is a memorial to Willingham Franklin esq. d. 1885:

the east window of the chapel is a memorial to the Rev. E. Wills, a former curate:

during the restoration of the chancel, in 1887, the ancient sedilia and piscine were discovered, and on the north side a tomb, probably that of the founder of the church, was uncovered:

the handsome carved oak triptych represents " The Crucifixion." with the figures of St. Nicholas on the left and St. George on the right:

the carved oak chancel screen was erected by the late rector in 1899, to the memory of his father, and is in the style of the early 15th century:

the nave was restored by the parishioners in 1865, at a cost of £800, and the chancel in 1887, by the late rector, at a cost of £900:

there are 200 sittings"

White's Directory 1872 has :-

"The Church (St. Nicholas) is an elegant Gothic fabric, with a tower surmounted by a crocketed spire.

It has a south aisle, divided from the nave by Anglo-Norman arches, with small indented mouldings.

The sedilia 'and a finely mullioned hagioscope remain, and the south chapel contains a stained glass window, in memory of the Rev. E. Wills, the late curate.

The church, with the exception of the chancel, has been thoroughly restored, at a cost of £800.

It contains a good organ, built by Messrs. Forster and Andrews of Hull, in 1872"

Organ blower installed after 1943 in memory of John Chaplyn Burnett.

Information from the sale of John Chaplyn Burnett's medals :-

"John Chaplyn Burnett was born at Alton, Hampshire in December 1863 and educated at Epsom College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1884, he was serving as a Captain at the outbreak of the Boer War. Serving initially in the Pom-Pom section, he would later be posted as a Staff Officer at the Dynamite Factory at Middlefontein. Having seen action in the Transvaal, May-June 1900, and east of Pretoria, July-November 1900. He finished the war on the Zululand frontier. The Grantham Journal in an obituary notice gives further detail on one enagement of particular note:

'At Witport, in 1900, he was in command of the Eastern Hills, with Major Munn in command of the Western. The Boers started shelling early morning and a message had to be dispatched calling for help, which was not sent untill dusk. Captain Burnett kept off the Boers all day, although the position on the Eastern Hills was constantly assailed. With a Vickers Maxim the foe was kept at bay, and when the gun could no longer fire, the locks were removed to a place of safety. The gun and carriage bore the marks of 14 bullets at the conclusion of the action.'

Besides the award of his D.S.O., which was presented by the King at Buckingham Palace on 18 December 1902, Burnett was advanced Major, 1 October 1902 and mentioned in the despatches (London Gazette, 10 September 1901, refers).

Having retired in 1909, he was residing in Khartoum, Sudan at the outbreak of the Great War and was re-engaged, '...where he undertook the training of the Camel Corps.'

Invalided home later that year, he served in the Ministry of Munitions as Safety Service Officer based at Leeds. In this position he '...was awarded the O.B.E., was was whilst engaged on this work that on one occasion he missed death through explosion by a few seconds.' (Sole entitlement to the B.W.M. confirmed)

Retired for a second time, Burnett relocated to Barkston, Lincolnshire and became a published mathmetician - indeed 13 Volumes of his work are in the library of University College, London (MS ADD 108, refers). Appointed to the Command of the Barkston Home Guard at the outbreak of the Second World War, he died in the summer of 1943"
