"The churchyard at the Church of Peter and St Paul is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map.

The current church dates from 1753, but an earlier, probably medieval, church is documented as being on or near to the site, and it is possible that the churchyard dates back to this period as well"

One of the best Georgian churches in Lincolnshire, St Peter and St Paul church in Cherry Willingham was built in 1753.

It is stone built and Classical with a pedimented west front. There is a fine Georgian reredos inside.

Kelly's Directory 1913 reads :-

"The church of St. Peter is a small building of freestone, in the Classial style, with a western turret containing one bell, erected by Thomas Becke esq. and restored in 1867 by Mr. John Glen Bayles, who also presented an organ and eagle lectern in 1870:

there is a memorial to the founder, who died Oct. 19, 1757. one to the Rev. George Rigg, vicar, dated 1868, and several to the Hutton family:

there are 100 sittings"

White's Directory 1872 has :-

"The Church (St. Peter & St. Paul), which was appropriated to Foss Nunnery, near Torksey, and rebuilt by Thomas Becke, Esq., who died in 1757, is a handsome freestone fabric, in the Grecian style, with a leaden roof, and an octagonal cupola of wood over the western pediment, for the bell.

It was reseated, decorated, and provided with a new organ and a beautiful eagle lectern, in the year 1869, at the sole expense of the churchwarden; and it contains many memorials of the Becke family, who formerly resided here, and were owners of the parish.

The benefice is a vicarage, valued in K.B. at £6. 13s. 4d., and now at £100 per annum. in the gift of the Boast and Carline families, and incumbency of the Rev. John Jackson Swift, M.A. The vicarial tithes were commuted in 1840, for £100"

Cherry Willingham Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1836. The builders paid attention to detail and made this little one-cell chapel decorative.

It is in red brick but has yellow brick trimmings and round headed windows.

The plaque above the door, now gone, was very large for the size of the chapel - what did it say?

The building is well cared for now with its use as the Parish Council Office.

In "A List And Brief Details Of Chapels In The Lincoln Circuits Past And Present" prepared by Colin Shepherdson (Revised October 2000) it is stated that :-

"The chapel, situated in the High Street, was built in 1864. The last service was held on the 30.8.98, although morning services had been held at the local comprehensive school for several years as the chapel was too small. The membership of 14 still continue to meet at the school.

The chapel is now used as a Parish Council Office and Drop In Information Centre"
