This seems to be an illustration of the demolished All Hallows Church.

White's Directory 1856 comments "The church is an ancient thatched structure, but the erection of a new one is in  contemplation; and the rectory, valued in K.B. at £9. 11s. 2d., and now at £222, is enjoyed by the Rev. George Hunter Fell, B.D., for whom a new Rectory House is building"

The present All Saints Church in Horsington was built 1858-60 by David Brandon. Illustration hanging in the south aisle of All Saints Church.

DB 25 July 2024

The painting is signed Nina Rice 1915. It would seem to be a copy of the drawing by Nattes in the collection at County Archives on which it has been noted that the building was demolished in 1860. The building shown stood a considerable distance south-west from the present church and its churchyard is accessible with permission from the farmer who owns the surrounding land. Nina Hardy (1869-1949) was born in Goring, Oxon and married Edward J H Rice, third son of Revd Richard H Rice, one time incumbent of Horsington.

Kelly's Directory 1919 has :-

"The church of All Saints, built in 1860 (in place of a temporary church used when All Hallows church had gone to ruin), is an edifice of red brick with stone dressings in the Early English Lancet style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western tower with broach spire and dormer lights containing one bell:

the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. J. F. Smith B. D. a former rector, d. May, 1871, and was erected by his widow; there are other memorial windows to Col. Bonar Millet Deane, 2nd son of the Rev. George Deane, late rector of Bighton, who fell in South Africa at the battle of Laings Nek, Jan. 28, 1881, and to Lieut. Evan Cowper Smith, son of the Rev. J. F. Smith, a former rector, who died of fever while serving in Afghanistan, July 26, 1880, aged 19, and also a memorial brass erected by Mrs. Cowper Smith to her son Capt. Arthur Monro Cowper Smith, who died 28th Sept. 1898, of injuries received in a grass fire while shooting big game on the Pungwe river:

there are 169 sittings"

William seems to have come from quite humble beginnings, his father dying when he was seven years old. He was a shepherd, then an agricultural foreman but by 1901 was farming on his ‘own account’ at Metheringham. In Kelly’s Directories from 1919 until 1937 Ogden & Robinson are shown as farmers in Horsington; Frederick Robinson was William Ogden’s son-in-law.

"The Church (All Saints), rebuilt in 1860, in lieu of the old thatched fabric, is a neat structure of brick, with stone dressings, and consists of nave, chancel, aisle and tower surmounted with a spire.

The east window is ornamented with stained glass, inserted by his widow, in memory of the Rev. T. F. Smith, B.D., the late rector, who died in May, 1871.

The rectory, valued in K.B. at £9. 11s. 2d., and now at £430 per annum, is in the incumbency of the Rev. Francis Hugh Deane, B.D., who has a commodious residence, erected in 1857, at the expense of the patrons.

At the enclosure, about 1760, 290 acres were allotted in lieu of tithes, and there are 14 acres of glebe in South Somercotes parish"

The roadside building on this site began as a WWI army hut brought from Mablethorpe to become a YMCA hut.

The second building at the rear was erected  in 1962 as a snooker hall.

Following the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977 the village raised funds to buy, renovate and improve the now neglected wooden hut which became the Village Hall. Since October 2023 it has been known as the Charles Hill Community Hall in recognition of the public service of that former resident. See:

The Elder Tree Inn was built in the 1920s by the Market Rasen Brewery Company Ltd. but later sold to become a free house. In Kelly’s 1933 Directory the landlord was William Donson who is listed as a beer retailer in Horsington as early as 1919. The pub changed hands just before the outbreak of Covid and has since been closed. It is said to be under renovation and it is hoped it will re-open soon.
