This quaint circular Cottage Orné in Langton by Spilsby (TF 392704) probably dates from the early 19th century.

(Curiously, Langton by Horncastle also has a 'Cottage Orné', though a less elaborate example that this. Dwellings of this type are quite uncommon in Lincolnshire.)

These steep slopes near Langton are extensively terraced and have served as sheep walks in modern times.

These features are said to be strip lynchets of medieval origin - though popular legend claims they were "Roman vineyards"!

The church of St Peter and St Paul at Langton by Spilsby was built in the 1720s.

It still has its original interior, with box pews facing across the nave, three-decker pulpit and west gallery.

John Betjeman rated it "one of the most attractive and interesting churches in Lincolnshire and therefore in England".

Samuel Johnson presumably came here when he visited his friend Bennet Langton, who lived in the former Old Hall in the village.

View from the south-west shows the classical stone doorway and the overhanging eaves.

The materials are red brick (laid in Flemish bond) with limestone and greenstone dressings.

The church has five bays with arched windows in typical Georgian style.

There are smaller blank panels above each window in all elevations.

This was the last grand house built by the Langtons in the village of Langton by Spilsby.

It was designed by James Fowler of Louth and erected at a cost of £8000 in the 1860s.

The house, in continual occupation by the Langtons, was extended in the 1870s and demolished in the 1950s.
