This house was built for Sir Rowland Winn in the 1770s, with enlargements in 1822 and 1862 (possibly by William Fowler of Winterton).
In 1885 Rowland Winn MP (grandson of Sir Rowland) was created Baron St Oswald and he occupied the house until his death in 1893.
The Winn family sold the contents of the house in 1928; a fire destroyed much of the house in 1933; and it was finally demolished during World War 2.
More details about this house and its owners can be found in T R Leach and R Pacey's book, 'Lost Lincolnshire Country Houses: Volume 2', published by SLHA. Buy a copy.

"Probably originally a wayside cross, but not in original position.
According to local tradition, this and the nearby cross base to the west (qv) were brought from Thornholm Priory 2 miles to the south"
https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1310071
There is a second cross base hidden in the long grass behind.
Risby Road leading off into the distance.

Externally the church of St Bartholomew, Appleby, dates from the restoration of 1883.
The chancel, though, is Perpendicular whilst the nave arcades are from the Decorated period.
The stained glass from Brussels in the east window was praised by Pevsner.
Mark Acton, April 2015

The tower of St Bartholomew's is thought to be older than the nave and chancel - perhaps thirteenth century.
The bell openings were created during restoration in the Victorian period.
April 2015

Grotesques, crockets and other decoration at the east end of the nave dating from work in 1883.
April 2015

Grotesque and crocketted pinnacle (added in 1883) at the south-east corner of the south aisle.
April 2015

Gargoyle and rain water head taking water from the roof of the south aisle close to the porch.

War Memorial "takes the form of an oak tree with a dedicatory granite stone of remembrance placed in front of it.
Etched on the top stone are seven names for World War 1 and on the lower stone are three for World War 2"
