View of the church from the south. Can there be a plainer tower?
Peter Kirk Collection, 1997

The squat tower of St Nicholas's church dates from the 11th century, as does the arch to the nave.
James Fowler restored the church in 1860, adding windows in early 14th century style, but retaining the 12th century chancel arch.
May 2009

The windows on the south side of the nave, in Geometrical style, date from the 1860 restoration.
Jews' Court collection, 1977

Photograph dated 1895 displayed within the church.

Kelly's Directory 1930 notes :-
"The church of St. Nicholas is a small but ancient edifice, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing one bell:
it was restored in 1860 at the sole expense of Henry Thorold esq. under the direction of Mr. James Fowler, architect; the roof was entirely renewed, the wooden casements were replaced by traceried windows of the Geometrical Decorated style, the tower arch opened, and the interior generally refitted: the church will seat 86 persons"

White's Directory 1872 has :-
"The Church (St. Nicholas), which is an ancient, ivy-mantled fabric, of rough stone, consists of nave, chancel, and a square tower.
It was well nigh rebuilt and interiorly restored in the year 1859, new windows being inserted, the roof considerably raised, and the old pews replaced by new and comfortable seats, to accommodate 60 persons, at a cost of £400, solely defrayed by Henry Thorold, Esq., the late patron.
The Register dates from the year 1659.
The living is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £5. 7s. 6d., and now at £306, in the incumbency of the Rev. John Penny, M.A., who has a good residence, built in 1859-60, towards the cost of which £880 was borrowed from the "Queen Anne's Bounty," the remainder being defrayed by the present incumbent. The glebe is 1A. 1R. 25P., and the tithes were commuted in the year 1838, for a rent charge of £314. 19s. 8d. per annum"
