The Dambusters raid was launched from RAF Scampton where 617 Squadron was based.

"Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on 16-17 May 1943 by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, later called the Dam Busters, using a purpose-built "bouncing bomb" developed by Barnes Wallis.

The Mohne and Edersee dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley; the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage"

The school was built in 1875 and was known as Scampton CE School by 1903.

In contrast to many nineteenth century primary schools where former schoolhouses have been converted to school accommodation, the attached schoolhouse to the west (left) is privately owned and occupied.

"RAF Scampton stands on the site of a First World War Royal Flying Corps landing field, which had been called Brattleby.

The station was closed and returned to agriculture following the First World War, and reactivated in the 1930s.

It has provided an airfield for fighters in the First World War, bombers during the Second World War and V-force Avro Vulcans during the Cold War.

Since the temporary closure of RAF Scampton in 1996, and subsequent reactivation, the base has provided a home for the RAF Aerobatic Team (RAFAT) the Red Arrows, and to private companies, temporarily, such as Hawker Hunter Aviation, for the maintenance and storage of aircraft"

The Gateway in Scampton House Field was built as the grand entry to Scampton Hall.

It was built for Sir John Bolle around 1603, but, following the demolition of the Hall, it now stands lonely in a field.

Kelly's Directory 1919 states "Scampton House, the residence of George Edward Sandars esq. is built on the site, of the Hall, of which the gateway, temp. James I., alone remains"

The tower of St John the Baptist Church is 14th century.

Much of the interior dates from 1876/7, though the chancel arch and the N aisle windows (seen here) are 16th century.

RAF Scampton is nearby, and the churchyard contains about 100 military graves. Many are the graves of allied aircrew who died during WW2.

Also here are the graves of several German airmen.

The west tower was probably rebuilt in the late Georgian period along with much of the rest of the church.

Kelly's Directory 1919 states "The church of St. John the Baptist is a small edifice of stone in the Early English style, with remains of Norman work, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells:

the church was restored in 1876-7, at a cost of £1,350, when the chancel was rebuilt, a vestry and organ chamber added, and the north aisle completely rebuilt, under the direction of Messrs. Bodley and Garner, of London, architects:

there are brasses on the wall to Sir John Bolle bart. of Scampton, ob. 8th March, 1648, and Catherine (Conyers) his wife, ob. 1644:

the church affords 180 sittings"

Local signage states "John Hannah was the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross in the Second World War.

He trained as a wireless operator/air gunner and was posted to 83 Squadron at RAF Scampton. 

On 15 September 1940, he and his crew took part in the Battle of the Barges. This was an operation to disable German barges that were preparing for an invasion of Britain.

Flak struck their aircraft and it quickly caught fire. The navigator and rear gunner bailed out but Hannah stayed aboard, fighting the fire.

The pilot, Clare Connor, brought the very badly damaged aircraft back to Scampton.

Hannah was awarded the VC at just 18 years of age. He had suffered serious burns and never fully recovered. He died in 1947 and was buried in Leicester.

To keep his memory alive at Scampton, the Hannah Rose variety was developed. It grows in a bed on the left as you enter the churchyard"

Here lies the body of Dame / Catherine Bolles the / only wife of Sr John Bolles / of Scampton Baronet eldest / daughter of Thomas Conyers / of Brodham in the county / of Nottingham Esquire / she departed this life the / 20 day of September at / the age of 55 and was buried / September the 21 / 1644.
